Because of the the work of BEJI and it's many partners, economic inequality in Boston is, at long last, commanding attention from Boston policymakers, Black residents of Boston, the media, and everyday citizens. The truth is, there is growing recognition that we need an inclusive economy that works for everyone in Boston. We will be fighting for you to make sure that Roxbury reinvestment and construction opporunitites don't ignore us.
We are happy to announce that BEJI has officially received it's nonprofit 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. BEJI is now a nonprofit organization registered with the U.S. Department of the Treasury. According to a recent article in The New York Times, Boston ranked third highest on the list of cities with growing income inequality, behind San Francisco and New York.
The article notes that the top 1% of households captured 90% of the income gained since the recent recession. The gap between the haves and the have-nots is the widest it’s been in 30 years. The Black Economic Justice Instutute (BEJI) is working to eradicate poverty in our communities. BEJI is fighting the institutional and systemic oppression in communities of color that have historically perpetuated poverty.

BEJI CANDIDATES NIGHT HUGE SUCCESS
We Did it! BEJI in partnership with a coalition of residents from historically African American communities of greater Roxbury and Dorchester along with the Roxbury/Dorchester Campaign for Good Jobs convinced the Roxbury Strategic Master Plan Oversight Committee to vote to adopt a plan that would require developers building on publicly-owned land in Roxbury to commit to living-wage standards for construction workers and for permanent jobs created by new construction projects. As reported by bizjournals.com the Boston Redvelopment Authority has made decisions about the development on what BEJI considers, "Historically Black Land". Read the article below on how the Boston Redevelopment Authority on Thursday evening approved eight major development projects, totaling $174.25 million in investment, spanning 528,735 square feet and including 570 new units of housing.
Here’s a breakdown of the projects:
Melnea Cass Boulevard hotel and residential:
Melnea Partners LLC has been approved to build a 108-room Marriott Residence Inn hotel and 50-unit apartment building on Parcel 9, which located at the intersection of Washington Street and Melnea Cass Boulevard in Roxbury. The hotel will pay workers $18 per hour. Construction is expected to start on the hotel and residences by year-end and wrap up by mid-2017.
Boston Children’s Hospital pedestrian connector: Boston Children’s Hospital received approval to build a 3,250-square-foot pedestrian connector linking the patient and family parking garage with the hospital’s main building to create a safe passage for patients, staff and visitors. The steel and glass bridge was designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects to be visually unobtrusive to passerby on Longwood Ave.
Whittier Street public housing redevelopment:
A partnership between the Boston Housing Authority, Preservation of Affordable Housing andMadison Park Development Corp. has received approval to redevelop Whittier Street public housing, one of the city’s oldest and most distressed public housing developments. The project, called Whittier Choice, will create 387 mixed-income rental units, public space, a recreation area and commercial space.
The development is located between Dudley Square and the Ruggles MBTA Orange Line station.
Madison Park infill: Madison Park Development Corp. plans to build 76 housing units along Melnea Cass Boulevard in Lower Roxbury. The project will be located on infill sites near the Madison Park Village, a housing development built by the Madison Park Development Corp. in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Center Plaza facelift: Shorenstein Co.’s $25 million plan to revitalize Center Plaza, a three-building concrete office and commercial complex that arcs around Suffolk Superior Court and overlooks Government Center, was approved. The renovation plan was designed by CBT Architects and includes new lobbies and passageways, a 21,000-square-foot penthouse addition that will create new office space and a rooftop garden, a 9,400-square-foot gound-floor addition and lighting improvements.
